Consumer Alert: Beware of VISA Email Scam
April 9, 2009 -- Attorney General Steve Six issued a warning today about a new email scam that has emerged. Emails are being sent to Kansans claiming to be from VISA, highlighting their "Verified by VISA" program, a fraud prevention service.
The email goes on to state that beginning on April 4, 2009, all VISA customers will be required to enroll in the program or they will be prohibited from making online purchases. A form is attached asking customers to activate this feature by providing their credit card number, expiration date, card verification value, and pin number.
This email is a scam. While the "Verified by VISA" program is legitimate, it is not a requirement for VISA card holders. VISA will not contact their customers by email, nor will they ask customers to provide personal identifying information by email or phone.
If you have received a similar email, contact the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division at 1(800) 432-2310. You may also consider notifying your banking institution and local law enforcement.
